Established over 100 years ago, the Department of English stands as one of the University's most venerable and distinguished academic divisions. As a founding department, it delivered some of the institution's earliest courses, with literature classes conducted by UM's inaugural president, Oscar J. Craig. In 1919, Rhodes Scholar H.G. Merriam launched one of the nation's pioneering creative writing programs. The department counts two recent Pulitzer Prize recipients - William Finnegan and Andrew Sean Greer - among its M.F.A. graduates.
Our Composition program supports the entire University community by providing WRIT 101, the mandatory first-year writing course, along with advanced composition classes and graduate-level seminars on writing instruction.
