The Department of Communication Studies at the University of Montana-Missoula explores three key academic domains: interpersonal dynamics and social connections, corporate and institutional messaging, and rhetorical theory and civic engagement. The competencies developed in these disciplines prove invaluable for navigating personal relationships, professional environments, and societal participation in our evolving global landscape.

Students can opt for a comprehensive Communication Studies major or specialize in one of three concentrations: Corporate Communications, Interpersonal Dynamics, or Rhetoric and Civic Engagement. These specialized tracks offer targeted preparation for specific career paths. Our distinguished faculty holds doctoral degrees, actively contributes to scholarly research, and remains dedicated to undergraduate education and mentorship. Department instructors consistently receive outstanding teaching evaluations, ranking among the university's highest-rated educators.

Most classes maintain small enrollments of 30 students or fewer. Our adaptable curriculum fosters comprehensive understanding of communication across private, professional, and civic spheres while developing critical speaking, writing, and analytical abilities. These competencies prove fundamental for diverse career trajectories. The department provides honors coursework and hosts a Lambda Pi Eta honor society chapter.

Our program maintains interdisciplinary connections with complementary fields including Gender Studies, Family Dynamics, Sustainability Science, Global Development, Climate Science, and NGO Management. We operate one of the university's most extensive internship initiatives.

Undergraduate research opportunities, practical training, and community engagement form integral components of our research methodology and organizational communication coursework. We actively support student participation in academic research and facilitate conference attendance for promising scholars.
