The Department of Communication Studies at the University of Montana-Missoula explores three key academic domains: interpersonal dynamics and social connections, communication within organizations and institutions, and rhetorical studies with public engagement. The competencies students develop in these fields prove invaluable for navigating personal relationships, professional environments, and civic participation in our fast-evolving global landscape.
Students can opt for a comprehensive Communication Studies major or choose among three specialized tracks: Organizational Communication, Human Relationships in Communication, or Rhetoric and Public Discourse. These concentrations offer targeted preparation for specific career paths. Our distinguished faculty holds doctoral degrees, actively contributes to communication research through publications, while maintaining a strong commitment to undergraduate education and mentorship. Department instructors consistently receive outstanding teaching evaluations, ranking among the university's highest-rated educators.
Most classes maintain small sizes, typically capped at 30 students. Our adaptable curriculum fosters comprehensive understanding of communication across personal, professional, and public spheres while developing critical speaking, writing, and analytical abilities. These competencies prove fundamental for diverse career paths. The department provides honors courses and hosts a Lambda Pi Eta honor society chapter.
Our program maintains robust connections with interdisciplinary minors including Women's Studies, Human and Family Development, Environmental Studies, International Development, Climate Change Studies, and Nonprofit Administration. We operate one of the university's most extensive internship initiatives.
Undergraduate research opportunities, practical training, and community engagement form integral components of our research methodology and organizational communication coursework. We actively support student involvement in scholarly projects and facilitate participation in academic conferences.
