The University of Montana has offered classical studies since 1895, when founding faculty member Father William M. Aber first taught Greek and Latin. Today, UM's classics program remains a sought-after field of study, providing instruction in classical languages from introductory to advanced levels. Beyond language studies, the curriculum delves into the history, literature, philosophy, and cultural heritage of ancient Mediterranean civilizations. Students can follow in the footsteps of legendary thinkers and creators through international study programs and research initiatives.
The program allows students to focus on specific interests within Greek or Latin language and culture. UM offers three specialization tracks: classical civilization, classical languages, or Latin language education. By mastering this ancient knowledge, students gain insight into the roots of artistic and literary traditions while examining historical approaches to enduring human challenges. This foundation prepares graduates for fulfilling careers that apply classical theories and methodologies in practical settings.
