The Master of Science in Biology program at UMSL delivers research-focused training
and education to prepare students for diverse career paths. Graduates can pursue roles as
professional biologists in corporate and industrial settings, continue into PhD programs,
or become skilled biology educators at secondary and community college levels.
UMSL's Biology Department provides three distinct pathways to complete the MS in Biology.
A 30-credit non-thesis track designed for professionals with substantial research background, educators aiming to enhance their teaching qualifications without research components, or individuals seeking to expand their biological knowledge.
A 32-credit Professional Science Emphasis option incorporating business fundamentals for those pursuing careers at the intersection of biology and commerce.
A 30-credit traditional research apprenticeship culminating in a thesis. Both thesis and non-thesis tracks allow specialization in either Cell and Molecular Biology or Ecology, Evolution and Systematics.
Career Pathways and Opportunities
Students frequently participate in faculty-led research initiatives, with alumni securing positions in both corporate and academic research settings. Advanced biology degrees open doors to multiple career trajectories depending on specialization. Research-oriented graduates can find positions in universities, government research facilities, or private sector laboratories. The biotech field presents opportunities in R&D, quality assurance, and compliance. Environmental science careers span conservation, sustainable development, and environmental protection. Teaching-focused graduates may enter educational roles at primary, secondary, or higher education levels.
