Entry into all Music degree programs requires an audition to assess musical ability and potential, technical skill, and commitment to pursuing music as a four-year academic path. Along with the performance audition, students may need to take placement tests in music theory and history to verify their prior knowledge in these subjects. Auditions can be arranged anytime for the next semester, with additional pre-set dates available during fall and early spring (reach out to the Music Department for specifics). Those enrolled in Applied Music (private lessons) must pass a junior-level evaluation to demonstrate their performance proficiency for enrollment in AP MUS 3440–AP MUS 3459 or AP MUS 4440–AP MUS 4459. This evaluation typically coincides with the applied music jury at the conclusion of the fourth semester in AP MUS 1440–AP MUS 1459.
Graduation from all Music degree programs demands proof of strong musicianship, familiarity with relevant musical repertoire, and the capability to perform it effectively. B.M., Performance Emphasis students meet this requirement through junior and senior recitals. Other degree candidates fulfill it with a senior recital. In certain cases, with approval from the student's applied instructor, non-performance majors may substitute the senior recital by performing in three scheduled student recitals during their final two semesters of applied music study or by presenting before a faculty panel.
