The Master of Music program enhances performance abilities and musical expertise, equipping graduates for professional careers in performance, teaching, or advanced doctoral studies. Admission requires a Bachelor's degree in music.
Comprehensive Exam Overview (see program pages for specific requirements)
MM and MA students showcase their proficiency through oral comprehensive exams by:
Demonstrating expertise in their primary field
Applying historical context and theoretical concepts to their specialization
These assessments typically occur in the fourth semester of full-time enrollment, evaluated by a panel of at least three faculty members from the discipline. All exams include analyzing score excerpts provided immediately before testing, with about half the exam time dedicated to this component. Electronic devices and internet access are prohibited during preparation.
Exams are evaluated on a pass/fail basis without opportunity for remedial work. Students who fail may retake the exam once during the following semester (excluding summer terms).
