The Department of Romance Languages and Literatures provides graduate programs in Spanish and French, along with a specialized MA track in foreign language instruction. Faculty and student seminars foster an interdisciplinary environment where researchers can share their latest projects. Studying abroad is highly recommended to enhance linguistic abilities, expand perspectives, and create lasting academic memories. This department uniquely features the nation's sole concentration in Afro-Romance Studies. To promote academic partnerships in this specialty, we created the Institute for Languages and Literatures of the African Diaspora, which primarily works to increase visibility for Francophone, Lusophone, and Hispanic authors of African descent.
MA candidates need 30 graduate-level credit hours, with a minimum of 15 at the 8000-level. Students may take no more than 12 combined credits in special readings (7960) or problems courses (8085), with a maximum of three special readings credits per semester in their major field. New Graduate Instructors without teaching experience or methodology training must enroll in FRENCH 7120, Foreign Language Teaching Methodology.
Prospective international students must complete an online language evaluation with their program coordinator before the department makes final admission decisions.
