The MA/PhD program in Classical Languages centers on the study of ancient Greek and Roman languages and literature, equipping students for academic careers in Classical Studies and similar disciplines at higher education institutions.
Typical completion time: 2 years for MA, 3 years for PhD, totaling 5 years.
Program Requirements
72 graduate-level (7000) credit hours total, with at least 30 at the MA level
24 MA credit hours must be completed on-site at MU, plus either two 9-hour or three 6-hour semesters within an 18-month period for PhD residency
12 seminar-level (8000) credit hours required for MA, plus 3 additional hours at PhD level
Research, readings, and problems courses cannot exceed 40% of total MA credit hours
Note: Graduate students with full-time (.5) assistantships must enroll in 9 graduate credit hours per semester until passing PhD comprehensive exams. Afterward, continuous enrollment can be maintained through AMS 9090: Doctoral Dissertation Research (2 credits each Fall/Spring, 1 credit each Summer) until PhD completion.
