Our program follows the conventional structure of political science disciplines, encompassing American politics, public policy/administration, international relations, and comparative politics. Additionally, we emphasize innovative research areas at the forefront of political science, such as race and ethnic politics, electoral behavior, political movements, civil conflicts, U.S. political systems, and dispute resolution. Students receive thorough methodological instruction in quantitative analysis, formal modeling and game theory, as well as qualitative approaches like interviews and archival studies. Our curriculum includes cutting-edge methodologies such as experimental designs, spatial econometrics, and big data processing (covering automated data gathering and textual analysis). We seek talented students eager to tackle significant research challenges using sophisticated analytical tools.
The University of Missouri fosters collaborative research between students and distinguished faculty specialists. Our dynamic program includes professors who regularly contribute to premier academic publications and scholarly presses, oversee major disciplinary journals, and instruct advanced methodology courses at global institutes. Consequently, our doctoral candidates frequently achieve publication in top-tier journals during their studies. While multiple student publications—both individual and faculty-collaborative works—are uncommon nationally, they represent standard outcomes for our graduates.
Our curriculum features intimate seminar-style courses that facilitate deep engagement with political science theories, close faculty mentorship, and personalized academic guidance. Under the supervision of graduate faculty, MU students develop into autonomous scholars equipped to analyze and investigate complex political and social dynamics through original research.
