The University of Missouri's Biochemistry program operates jointly under the College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources and the School of Medicine. Recognized as a top 10 public medical school biochemistry department nationally, we provide exceptional education that empowers students to reach their aspirations. Our program includes around 39 primary faculty members plus 10 additional instructors, all dedicated to guiding students through their biochemistry studies.
Their combined research expertise covers virtually every area of modern biochemical investigation. Our collaborative program forms a key component of university-wide research initiatives spanning life sciences, genetics, nutrition, plant biochemistry, and structural biology.
Beyond coursework and seminars, students participate in laboratory rotations, dissertation projects, qualifying and comprehensive examinations, and committee meetings, ultimately defending their dissertation. To maintain full-time graduate status before passing comprehensive exams, students must complete nine credit hours each semester (or four during summer). After comprehensive exam completion, continuous enrollment requires registration for at least two thesis/dissertation research hours per semester (one in summer), though additional credits may be necessary to meet the MU Graduate School's 72-credit PhD requirement.
