The Bachelor of Science in Education with a focus on Special Education equips future educators to support students from kindergarten to 12th grade across public, private, and alternative school settings. This program is ideal for those passionate about assisting children and teens facing challenges or with unique needs, aspiring to guide them toward becoming capable individuals, and skilled at teamwork. At MU, students gain hands-on experience alongside mentors, experienced teachers, administrators, and faculty, building expertise to improve educational results for youth with or at risk for disabilities. The College of Education & Human Development curriculum emphasizes educators' roles in fostering learning at every developmental stage while examining how cultural, political, historical, and economic factors shape students, teachers, and schools. Graduates who complete certification requirements earn state approval in Special Education: Mild-Moderate Cross Categorical. Hands-on classroom training starts in the second year and progresses each term, culminating in a yearlong teaching internship during senior year to refine instructional abilities. The program emphasizes teaching strategies for students with mild to moderate disabilities, covering essential topics like math and literacy instruction, behavior management, language development, and cross-categorical teaching methods.
