The University of Missouri offers an excellent environment for aspiring professional performers, music educators, or those simply looking to continue playing for enjoyment and skill enhancement. Woodwind music undergraduates can pursue Bachelor of Music degrees in various specializations including performance, music education, composition, theory, or history, or opt for a more flexible Bachelor of Arts in Music that accommodates interdisciplinary studies. Most courses, ensembles, and private instruction are available to non-degree-seeking students. MU caters to musicians of all levels and ambitions, whether as a primary major, secondary focus, minor, or extracurricular pursuit:
Personalized instruction from faculty who maintain active performance careers
Participation in large ensembles including symphonic bands, orchestras, jazz groups, and spirit bands
Specialized faculty-led groups (flute choir, clarinet ensemble, bassoon group, saxophone collective) and intimate chamber groups (woodwind quintets, saxophone quartets, mixed instrumentation ensembles, jazz combos)
Performance opportunities at regional, national, and international conferences and touring events
Educational sessions and performances featuring distinguished guest artists
Showcase opportunities and competitive events for soloists and chamber groups
Compensated teaching and performance work through community outreach initiatives
Professional preparation through the Entrepreneurship Program offering specialized courses, practical workshops, and real-world internships
Undergraduate scholarships are granted based on artistic merit and academic performance. While most awards support music and music education majors, exceptional non-majors playing less common instruments may qualify for limited scholarships. All scholarship considerations require an audition during Mizzou's designated Music Days.
