The field of Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences (SLHS) explores normal speech, language, and hearing development throughout life, along with communication impairments caused by various factors. The SLHS bachelor's program serves as foundational training for future careers in speech-language pathology and audiology. Professionals in speech-language pathology assess communication abilities in individuals of all ages, diagnosing issues related to voice production, speech sounds, fluency, and language comprehension or expression. They then create and administer tailored treatment programs. Audiologists specialize in hearing assessment, identifying hearing impairments, and assisting with hearing rehabilitation. The SLHS undergraduate program thoroughly equips students for advanced studies in either discipline, as both careers necessitate graduate-level education. The curriculum offers comprehensive knowledge about the scientific foundations of communication processes, various communication disorders, and assessment/intervention techniques. MU's SLHS students enjoy small class sizes, hands-on training through the department's preschool language program, accent modification services, faculty-led research opportunities, and an active student association.
