The Bachelor of Health Science in Occupational Therapy Assistant (BHS-OTA) Program equips students to become occupational therapy assistants (OTAs), working under licensed occupational therapists (OTs). OTAs are trained healthcare providers who help people of all ages achieve greater independence in daily activities through therapeutic interventions. They apply evidence-based practices and a comprehensive approach to integrate patients' meaningful occupations into treatment plans. The BHS-OTA degree offers students an undergraduate pathway to enter a high-demand healthcare field with competitive starting salaries. Graduates may also advance their education by pursuing a clinical doctorate in occupational therapy to become OTs or a PhD for careers in rehabilitation science, all while maintaining their OTA licensure. The program prepares graduates for diverse work environments such as hospitals, schools, nursing homes, clinics, home healthcare, early intervention programs, mental health facilities, and community organizations. Upon graduation, MU OTA students will:
Apply evidence-based approaches to deliver quality healthcare services and implement scientifically validated interventions, using research to guide clinical decisions.
Engage in continuous professional development through self-reflection and clinical reasoning as required in healthcare professions.
Exhibit entry-level OTA skills by applying occupation-focused methods to adapt to evolving practice settings in both rural and urban areas, serving diverse patient groups.
Meet the occupational requirements of individuals and communities to enhance public health results.
Display professional conduct aligned with ethical standards while cultivating their professional identity through a capstone project in clinical practice, management, leadership, advocacy, or education.
