The Metropolitan Design Program at the College of Design addresses the complex issues facing modern cities in the 21st century. As population changes and economic transformations redefine urban and suburban areas, cities have emerged as hubs for talent and innovation, driven by the growth of knowledge-based industries. Enrolled in the M.S. in Metropolitan Design, students explore the historical evolution of cities, examine urbanization patterns through specific examples, and apply these insights in practical urban-design studio projects. This program prepares graduates with the expertise to participate in urban planning decisions within design firms, government entities, and urban-focused nonprofit organizations. The Master of Science in Metropolitan Design is a specialized curriculum designed for those deeply invested in understanding cities and their surrounding regions. The MS-MD Program blends rigorous design education with hands-on research in urban design history and theory. Its goal is to prepare students to operate at various urban scales while understanding the social, environmental, economic, and political factors that influence urban life. The program welcomes professionals from design fields and offers dual-degree opportunities for students pursuing M.Arch and MLA degrees. Dual-degree candidates must complete their professional programs before earning the MS-MD.
