This interdisciplinary program spans multiple departments, delivering thorough education in water resources science while bridging various scientific fields. It features a carefully designed graduate curriculum with required foundational courses and specialized electives covering: aquatic biology, environmental chemistry, hydrologic science, limnology, water technology, water policy, water quality, and watershed science. Students may also pursue a Limnology and Oceanography specialization. Over 80 courses from 15 additional graduate programs are accessible to water resources science majors.
The program aims to cultivate scientists with robust technical expertise in water-related disciplines and a holistic grasp of: 1) the water cycle and linked ecosystems, 2) the interdependence of sciences in aquatic resource management, and 3) the relationship between natural sciences and social sciences in water policy formation.
Participants gain comprehensive scientific understanding of complex aquatic systems and watersheds, along with knowledge of societal aspects such as policy frameworks and legal structures governing water resource protection and management.
Faculty contributors come from Twin Cities campus departments including: Applied Economics, Bioproducts Engineering, Civil Engineering, Earth Sciences, Ecology, Entomology, Environmental Health, Fisheries Biology, Forest Resources, Geography, Horticulture, Plant Biology, and Soil Science. Duluth campus participants include faculty from: Biology, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Civil Engineering, Geography, Geological Sciences, Physics, plus the Large Lakes Observatory and Natural Resources Research Institute.
The preferred undergraduate GPA for admittance to the program is 3.00.
The program is flexible enough to accommodate students from a variety of backgrounds. Normally students have a master's degree in physical, biological, or environmental science or engineering.
