Plant pathology examines the science behind plant-microbe relationships, encompassing studies at biochemical, molecular, genetic, physiological, organismal, population, and ecological scales. This field intersects with all plant science specialties, along with food science, veterinary medicine, bioproducts, and environmental studies. Key focus areas comprise molecular plant pathology (available as a specialized track), plant disease control, biocontrol methods, forest pathology and wood degradation, microbial ecosystems, population dynamics, plant-pathogen interactions, disease resistance mechanisms, host-parasite evolution, beneficial plant-microbe relationships, and virus studies. Learners gain access to laboratory and fieldwork opportunities both locally and globally. Academic programs adapt to each specialization's needs and individual student interests. Those selecting the molecular plant pathology emphasis strengthen their skills in employing molecular techniques to study plant diseases, expand fundamental understanding, and create innovative disease management solutions.
The preferred undergraduate GPA for admittance to the program is 3.50.
Applicants must have a sound college background in the basic biological and physical sciences and mathematics.
Applicants must satisfy all the prerequisites for the master's degree program in plant pathology, or have a master's degree in either plant pathology or a field of natural science.
