At the University of Minnesota, astronomy and astrophysics research spans from examining the life cycles of stars to investigating vast galaxy clusters. Computational studies explore stellar evolution and the physics of galaxy clusters. Researchers utilize the 11.8-meter Large Binocular Telescope, the 6.5-meter MMT telescope, and space observatories to study diverse phenomena, including galaxy development from local dwarfs to distant high-redshift systems, comet characteristics, massive star lifecycles, stellar explosions, and remote individual stars. Radio and X-ray observations help analyze supernova remnants and galaxy clusters, while gamma-ray instruments investigate active galactic nuclei. Another key research area involves gravitational lensing effects caused by galaxies and their clusters.
