This program offers specialized scientific education in fundamental life sciences, focusing particularly on molecular genetics, developmental processes, and cellular biology. Key research areas encompass membrane systems, receptor functions, cellular transport mechanisms, macromolecular architecture, extracellular structures, cytoskeletal dynamics, gene regulation, neurobiology, developmental pathways, human genetics, plant molecular biology, genetic systems, and genomic studies. The interdisciplinary curriculum draws faculty expertise from multiple departments across the College of Biological Sciences, Medical School, and College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences. Graduate research opportunities exist through specialized institutes focusing on human genetics, plant molecular genetics, bioprocessing technologies, genome editing, stem cell research, and developmental biology centers.PhD candidates initially enroll through the Molecular, Cellular and Structural Biology (MCSB) gateway program, jointly administered by MCDB&G and the Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Biophysics (BMBB) graduate programs. Following the first year, students specialize by choosing either MCDB&G or BMBB for their doctoral studies. Note that MCDB&G does not offer a separate master's degree program. The MCDB&G PhD program participates in two dual-degree options: The Law, Health, and Life Sciences Joint Degree Program and the MD-PhD Medical Scientist Training Program. The innovative Law, Health, and Life Sciences Joint Degree Program allows students to pursue concurrent JD and PhD/MS degrees, requiring separate admissions to both MCDB&G and the Law School. MS and PhD applicants meet identical admission standards, with degree selection based on professional goals. The MD-PhD (MSTP) program integrates medical education with intensive research training through a tailored curriculum that facilitates transitions between medical school and graduate research phases.
