The SJMC doctoral program equips aspiring scholars for academic careers focused on teaching and investigating mass communication and associated disciplines. The curriculum provides comprehensive grounding in the field by examining diverse theories and methodologies that define mass communication scholarship. Students are empowered to cultivate their unique theoretical and methodological perspectives while collaborating with our interdisciplinary faculty on innovative research within global, multicultural frameworks. Most doctoral candidates secure tenure-track positions at universities, with our alumni holding positions at prestigious institutions worldwide. SJMC PhD recipients have also established careers with leading non-profits, prominent advertising/PR agencies, media outlets, research institutions, multinational corporations, and as independent consultants.
Anyone who has or will obtain a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution in the U.S. or a comparable degree from an officially recognized college or university outside the U.S. may apply for graduate admission.

Admission is considered for fall semester only; the application deadline is January 15.
