For thousands of years, humanity's survival has relied on our capacity to comprehend and anticipate others' actions. In modern times, both personal and career achievements still hinge on grasping and forecasting human experiences and conduct. Psychology serves as the scientific exploration of these phenomena. Given humans' intricate nature, psychologists utilize diverse viewpoints, spanning evolutionary, biological, social, organizational, institutional, and sociocultural approaches. These perspectives shape psychologists' analytical frameworks, examining everything from genetic factors to brain functions, personality traits, social dynamics, group affiliations, institutional environments, and cultural contexts. While psychology shares with other liberal arts the study of human experience, its distinctiveness lies in the specialized concepts and investigative techniques psychologists employ to understand people.
The Bachelor of Science program focuses on complementary studies in biologically-oriented and quantitative psychology, incorporating disciplines like neuroscience, cognitive science, computer science, biology, chemistry, and mathematics. This degree path equips students for advanced study in psychology and related areas. Those fascinated by biological, genetic, or evolutionary aspects of behavior should consider supplementary coursework in life sciences, while students drawn to quantitative methods or cognitive foundations would benefit from mathematics, statistics, and computer science classes. A psychology B.S. offers excellent preparation for various careers and graduate programs, including psychology, medicine, neuroscience, and computer science. Becoming a professional psychologist requires education beyond the undergraduate level.
