The plant and microbial biology (PMB) program educates students in all biological disciplines related to plants and microbes. Learners can choose to specialize in plant studies, microbial research, or the complex relationships between them, including beneficial symbioses or disease-causing interactions. Every PMB student is assured hands-on laboratory research experience, provided they maintain good academic standing and secure placement by their junior year midpoint. Faculty research encompasses diverse areas such as genetic studies, gene regulation, chromosomal organization, plant hormones, cellular signaling, stress responses in plants, developmental metabolism, evolutionary genetics, fungal-plant relationships, bacterial functions, biotech applications of microbes, nitrogen-fixing plant-bacteria symbiosis, environmental cleanup using microorganisms, bacterial detection techniques, and microbial community genomics.
