The Department of German, Scandinavian, and Dutch provides undergraduate programs including a major, multiple minor options, and diverse course offerings covering the languages, literature, intellectual traditions, media, and cultures of Germany, Scandinavia, Finland, Austria, Switzerland, and the Netherlands. Students pursuing the German, Scandinavian, Dutch (GSD) major can either blend studies across the department's language and literature offerings or focus their studies specifically on German or Scandinavian and Finnish studies. Numerous students pair this major with other disciplines such as business, computer science, biology, English, history, linguistics, political science, or interdisciplinary programs like global studies, media studies, and sustainability studies. Through the GSD major, learners achieve advanced language proficiency, gain insight into evolving cultural and social frameworks across different media forms (from oral traditions to digital media), and enhance their cross-cultural understanding. This major particularly prepares students for careers in public, private, and non-profit sectors where multilingual and intercultural expertise is valuable. The department strongly encourages at least six months of study abroad to improve language skills and cultural awareness. Study abroad credits may count toward major or minor requirements. Available minors include Dutch, German, Finnish, Norwegian, Swedish, and Austrian & Central European Studies.
