American Indian studies focuses on promoting knowledge and insight into the past and present lives of Native American communities. The curriculum primarily examines indigenous groups in the U.S. and Canada while incorporating perspectives from native populations worldwide. This interdisciplinary area explores diverse aspects including history, cultural traditions, artistic expressions, linguistic systems, written works, belief systems, economic structures, governance models, and legal rights of indigenous communities. The program highlights both the distinct characteristics that define tribal nations as autonomous entities and the shared values that bind them together. Particular emphasis is placed on tribal sovereignty as manifested across various aspects of life - from safeguarding and reviving native tongues to defending ancestral territories.
