The Master's in International and Regional Studies (MIRS) equips students with global comparative insights and analytical frameworks to comprehend and tackle worldwide challenges. This program blends interdisciplinary coursework, specialized regional/thematic knowledge, methodical training, and international exposure, helping students examine issues through cultural, historical, political, and socioeconomic lenses. MIRS prepares graduates for diverse global careers in academia, government, or private sectors by leveraging the International Institute's renowned interdisciplinary centers—several recognized as U.S. Department of Education National Resource Centers. Students can choose between regional or thematic concentrations with specialized tracks tied to these centers.
Within MIRS, the African studies concentration provides interdisciplinary expertise for students focusing on Africa. This track includes coursework spanning languages, literature, arts, history, governance, economics, public health, environmental studies, and development across university departments. Its adaptable yet thorough curriculum prepares students for careers in Africa, government service, or doctoral research.
Applicants complete a bachelor’s degree from a U.S. college or university accredited by a regional accrediting association; or complete an international degree that is equivalent to a U.S. bachelor’s degree from a college or university recognized and approved by the Ministry of Education or Commission responsible for higher education in the country where the degree is earned.
