Modern civilization has become deeply dependent on large-scale cloud computing systems that support every aspect of daily life, including transportation, communication, commerce, governance, and scientific research. These capabilities are powered by massively parallel, warehouse-sized computing facilities run by major providers such as Amazon, Facebook, Microsoft, and Google, along with various private and governmental organizations. Developers creating future data-heavy applications and large-scale computing systems must overcome significant obstacles, such as enhancing speed, boosting developer efficiency, ensuring service quality, optimizing energy use, managing power supply, maintaining system reliability, regulating temperatures, and improving operational control. Within this field, CSE faculty are working on developing both hardware and software foundations for enormous computing systems. Key research areas encompass server design, specialized hardware, accelerator technology and GPU computing, scientific computation, new memory solutions, data center infrastructure, distributed software and storage, virtualization techniques, advanced networking, and cloud programming frameworks.
