The Master of Science (MS) program spans two years and includes assured financial assistance from the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences (EARTH). Students also have the choice to pursue an embedded MS degree while working toward their PhD, where coursework applies to both degrees and requires both a Master's thesis and PhD dissertation. Those transitioning from MS to PhD will complete their Qualifying Exam during their fourth graduate term. Upon enrollment, each student and their advisor must select an Academic Mentor—an EARTH faculty member knowledgeable about the student's research. While the advisor oversees research and funding, the mentor provides informal guidance, assisting first-year students in navigating graduate school complexities, understanding departmental and Rackham protocols, meeting academic standards, addressing challenges, and exploring career paths.
Students holding a BS degree may apply either to our PhD program or to our MS program.
The minimum required Rackham cumulative grade point average is B (3.00 on a 4.00 point scale).
