Data science is a multidisciplinary domain that applies methods and concepts from mathematics, statistics, computer science, domain expertise, and information technology. Turing Award recipient Jim Gray recognized it as the fourth scientific paradigm, following empirical, theoretical, and computational approaches. According to a McKinsey Global Institute study, data science ranks among the top professions in the U.S., with industries projected to require a substantial number of data scientists in the coming decade. The Master's in Data Science is a 30-credit interdisciplinary graduate program featuring core requirements and technical electives. This structure enables students to develop expertise and professional competencies in high-demand data science fields. While optional, the program suggests four focus areas for specialized interests: Computational Intelligence, Applications, Business Analytics, and Big Data Informatics. Students can tailor their education by selecting from diverse courses across UM-Dearborn's four colleges, aligning with their career aspirations in data science. These offerings leverage extensive university-wide computing resources and facilities.
Our diverse community of graduate students comes from many different countries and many undergraduate majors, including statistics, mathematics, computer science, physics, engineering, information, and data science. While a Data Science undergraduate major is not required, it is expected that applicants will have at least the following background before they join:
2 semesters of college calculus
1 semester of linear or matrix algebra
1 introduction to computing course
The minimum cumulative GPA to graduate is 3.0 (B on the graduate scale).
