The M.A. program caters to University of Michigan students enrolled in professional or academic programs outside philosophy who would benefit from graduate-level philosophical training. Admission is typically restricted to these students, with exceptions made at the discretion of the admissions committee after reviewing applications. Those wishing to transition from the M.A. to Ph.D. program must complete the standard application process and compete with all other candidates - no preferential treatment is given to current M.A. students. Accepted Ph.D. students may petition to have their M.A. coursework count toward doctoral requirements, though this isn't guaranteed.
