The M.A. program caters to University of Michigan students enrolled in professional programs or academic degrees outside philosophy who would benefit from graduate-level philosophical training. Admission is typically restricted to these students, with exceptions made at the discretion of the admissions committee after reviewing applications. Those wishing to transition from the M.A. to Ph.D. program must complete the standard application process and compete with all other candidates, receiving no preferential treatment. Accepted Ph.D. students may petition to have their M.A. coursework count toward doctoral requirements, though this isn't guaranteed.
There is no minimum overall undergraduate GPA. However, successful applicants nearly always have an average GPA higher than 3.8 in their philosophy courses. (They also tend to have exceptional overall GPAs, but we pay most attention to grades in philosophy courses.)
