At the University of Michigan's Department of Comparative Literature, we explore both the practical application and theoretical examination of translation, which we define expansively. Translation, in our view, represents a time-honored liberal art encompassing diverse practices with rich aesthetic, historical, economic, moral, and philosophical aspects—each deserving thorough scholarly investigation. It serves as a fundamental principle in knowledge acquisition and transmission across academic fields within and outside the humanities, while also being an essential professional skill for graduate students. We consider translation crucial for fostering academic and broader communities. We welcome graduate students from various disciplines to participate in this collaborative endeavor.
