The Department of Romance Languages and Literatures features a world-renowned faculty, offering students professional training in French, Italian, Spanish, and Portuguese studies. Our distinctive program encourages cross-disciplinary exploration, allowing students to customize their academic path with faculty advisors. Course selections extend beyond RLL offerings to include classes throughout the University of Michigan. Structured program benchmarks (including fourth-term evaluations, qualifying exams, and dissertation proposal meetings) help students advance toward completing their research objectives. Additionally, RLL graduate candidates may earn interdisciplinary Graduate Certificates in diverse fields such as LGBT Studies, Latin American and Caribbean Studies, Latina/o Studies, Medieval and Early Modern Studies, Museum Studies, Screen Arts, and Women's Studies.
Applicants complete a bachelor’s degree from a U.S. college or university accredited by a regional accrediting association; or complete an international degree that is equivalent to a U.S. bachelor’s degree from a college or university recognized and approved by the Ministry of Education or Commission responsible for higher education in the country where the degree is earned.
