The University of Michigan's Pharmacology Department boasts a rich legacy spanning more than 110 years, marked by groundbreaking scientific advancements and student education. Established 41 years after the Medical School's founding, it became one of the university's earliest basic science departments. John Jacob Abel, celebrated as the Father of American Pharmacology, founded and led the department. To date, our institution has conferred more pharmacology Ph.D. degrees than any other U.S. university. Our alumni have significantly influenced the pharmacological field, holding leadership roles as pharmaceutical executives, research directors, government lab leaders, and distinguished academic faculty known for both research and teaching excellence. A cornerstone of our department's success lies in our exceptional trainees and faculty's unwavering dedication to education. With over 50 nationally and internationally renowned faculty members, our department covers diverse research areas and methodologies, from crystallography to systems pharmacology.
