The phonetics and phonology faculty share research interests in connecting cognitive representations of language with their physical manifestations, employing experimental approaches to study speech. San Duanmu focuses on phonological analysis, utilizing quantitative methods and corpus data to assess linguistic elements like segments, features, and syllables across multiple languages. Patrice Beddor and Jelena Krivokapi specialize in phonetic research—Beddor examines coarticulation's role in sound change through production and perception studies, while Krivokapi explores prosody's connection to articulation, acoustics, and perception. Andries Coetzee bridges phonology and phonetics, concentrating on perception-production relationships. These four faculty members, along with intonation expert Robin Queen, investigate language variation. The department's historical linguists contribute additional phonological knowledge to coursework. Collaborators from other disciplines include Julie Boland and Ioulia Kovelman (Psychology), Greg Wakefield (Computer Science & Engineering), and researchers at the Kresge Hearing Research Institute who study speech and phonological processing.
