Before the Program launched in 1999, the University of Michigan lacked a unified platform to promote immunology research training and collaboration. The Immunology program has played a vital role in connecting research labs across different departments within the medical school, such as Pathology, Surgery, Microbiology and Immunology, and various Internal Medicine divisions. The doctoral Program in Immunology at the University of Michigan aims to cultivate future pioneers in molecular and cellular immunology. Additionally, we strive to mentor students for advanced immunology research while preparing them to approach scientific challenges from diverse viewpoints. Students develop independent thinking while exploring their research interests within a highly adaptable and varied program. Over 54 faculty members from Medicine, Pharmacy, Dentistry, and the College of Literature, Science and the Arts (LSA) contribute to graduate immunology training by integrating molecular biology, biochemistry, genetics, and biophysics into the coursework. More than half of the Immunology faculty work in clinical departments, offering students exceptional opportunities for translational research training. Another benefit of the Immunology Ph.D. Program's personalized approach is enabling students to blend comprehensive coursework with hands-on research under their chosen mentors. Personalized guidance and mentorship are defining features of this dynamic and forward-thinking program.
