The Department of Communication and Media ranks among the leading departments at a globally recognized institution. The University of Michigan's recently revamped Ph.D. in Communication and Media offers an interdisciplinary curriculum with two primary focus areas: Social Scientific Analysis of Mass Media Effects and humanities-oriented Media, Culture and Society studies. Our program stands out by exposing students to both humanities and social science methodologies, empowering them to select approaches aligned with their research interests while particularly advocating for multi-method research strategies. Faculty members share a deep commitment to examining media's dual potential to either strengthen or weaken democratic systems, their influence on identity formation, their global impact, industry operations, regulatory frameworks, and persuasive power.
