A dental hygienist plays a vital role in the oral healthcare team, delivering various services focused on patient care and education. The Bachelor of Science (BS) entry-level program equips students with the necessary skills and knowledge to enter this profession. This comprehensive program covers clinical practice while also introducing opportunities in research, teaching, public health, management, and policy work. Through a combination of lectures, lab sessions, and practical training at specialized clinics, students gain diverse patient care exposure. Collaborative learning with dental students through shared courses and clinical cases further enriches the educational journey. Expert faculty from both dental and hygiene disciplines mentor students, fostering future leaders in the field. Since May 2019, the University of Michigan School of Dentistry's BS in Dental Hygiene has operated as an intensive 2-year, six-semester program, with new cohorts starting each spring semester after orientation.
