The Biology Program provides eight distinct majors, covering specialized areas from cellular and molecular biology to ecology and evolutionary studies. New students at U-M don't need to choose a major immediately. Exploring multiple biology courses can help identify your preferred area within the biological sciences. For those pursuing a biology degree, starting prerequisite courses early and consulting a major advisor during your first or second year is highly advised to develop an academic plan. The Plant Biology major equips students with foundational scientific knowledge crucial for modern plant science. Similar to the general Biology major, it covers all key biological levels—molecular, cellular, organismal, ecological, and evolutionary—but with a stronger focus on plant biology. This program is ideal for students seeking a biology-focused liberal arts education, preparing for secondary school teaching, or planning advanced studies in plant sciences and related disciplines like ecology, genetics, microbiology, and biochemistry.
