The Biology Program provides eight distinct majors, spanning specializations from cellular and molecular biology to ecology and evolutionary studies. New students at U-M don't need to choose a specific major immediately. Exploring multiple biology courses often helps identify which area of biological sciences aligns with your interests. For those pursuing a biology degree, starting prerequisite courses early and consulting a major advisor during your first or second year is highly advised to develop an academic roadmap. Microbiology encompasses the study of viruses, bacteria, algae, fungi, and protozoa, along with immunobiology. This major lays the foundation for advanced studies in microbiology, biochemistry, agricultural science, and food science, as well as other biology fields focusing on cellular structures. Graduates with a microbiology bachelor's degree can pursue entry-level roles in medical, industrial, or government research labs.
