The Music major offers students comprehensive exposure to musical studies, encompassing both artistic creation and analytical evaluation through courses in music history and theory, as well as foundational training in composition and performance. Designed to complement the LSA Bachelor of Arts and Sciences programs, this major presents a humanities-focused option compared to the specialized Bachelor of Musical Arts and Bachelor of Music degrees available through the School of Music. This program aims to cultivate an appreciation of music as both artistic expression and cultural phenomenon across various historical periods, societies, and global locations. Through musical education, students develop insights into the aesthetic, societal, political, spiritual, and individual meanings woven into musical compositions and traditions. The curriculum also explores music theory concepts, interdisciplinary connections with other art forms and fields of study, and the evolving role of technology in shaping musical innovation and distribution.
