Students enrolled in the Major explore contemporary Hellenic studies, focusing particularly on Greece and Greek-American communities. They delve into the ancient and medieval roots of Hellenism. Beyond developing expertise in modern Greek language, culture, and history, learners engage with multiple academic disciplines through diverse coursework, gaining insight into various approaches to studying civilizations. This major offers a comprehensive liberal arts foundation while fostering analytical thinking and complementary abilities. The program leverages the exceptional resources of the Classical Studies Department and Comparative Literature Program, along with the College's established expertise in Western European, Balkan, and Mediterranean studies. Alongside the general objectives for all majors, the Modern Greek program requires students to: achieve high-level proficiency in Modern Greek across speaking, writing, reading, and listening; investigate the language, literature, and culture of Greek-speaking populations during the modern era at the Eastern Mediterranean crossroads and in global diaspora communities; analyze the intersection of Modern Greek Studies with history, political science, anthropology, and classical civilization; and study the evolution of Hellenic concepts, artistic expressions, and geographical spaces in modern contexts.
