The Latin major offers students a comprehensive journey through Latin literature, spanning classical works from the late Republic and early-to-high Empire, through Late Antiquity and the Medieval era, extending to neo-Latin writings of the early modern period. The curriculum starts with classical Latin, featuring authors like Cicero, Vergil, Horace, Livy, and Tacitus. While study abroad in Italy is optional, the Intercollegiate Center for Classical Studies in Rome provides an outstanding semester program. Beyond the general learning objectives for all majors, the three language tracks aim to: develop advanced proficiency in ancient languages and a nuanced grasp of linguistic meaning, cultivate deep familiarity with core literary works and genres through meticulous reading and analysis of original texts, recognize ancient languages as the foundation for medical, legal, and scientific terminology, appreciate classical literature's enduring impact on culture and creativity across centuries, and enhance writing skills by applying classical rhetorical and narrative techniques for clarity and persuasion.
