The Interdisciplinary Chemical Sciences (ICS) program offers students the adaptability to combine fundamental chemistry studies with coursework in related disciplines. This major is designed for pre-health students, those exploring connections between science and societal issues like environmental policy, individuals pursuing philosophy or history of science requiring solid scientific grounding, and students drawn to cross-disciplinary sciences not fully covered by single departments. The ICS major provides excellent preparation for science graduate programs, interdisciplinary graduate studies benefiting from scientific expertise, professional schools (medical, legal, business), or immediate workforce entry. Chemistry curricula support career paths in chemistry, biochemistry, medicine, chemical engineering, pharmacy, and related fields, while also offering chemical literacy for liberal arts students. After introductory courses, the focus shifts to building specialized knowledge and hands-on lab skills crucial for chemistry and adjacent scientific domains. Undergraduate majors equip students for roles in research labs, testing facilities, and business positions valuing chemical expertise. Advanced graduate study is essential for academic teaching careers or industrial research positions.
