The ancient Greek major enables students to explore diverse interests across Greek literature spanning from Homeric epics to Byzantine times, encompassing the archaic, classical, Hellenistic periods, and New Testament Koine Greek. Starting with Attic Greek—the language of fifth-century BCE Athens—students gain access to a cultural and linguistic foundation for studying various genres, including philosophy, oratory, epic poetry, lyric verse, history, drama, and biblical texts. Beyond the core learning objectives for all majors, the three language tracks require students to: develop advanced proficiency in ancient language(s) and a nuanced grasp of linguistic meaning; cultivate deep familiarity with seminal literary works through meticulous analysis of original texts; recognize ancient language(s) as the root of terminology in medicine, law, and sciences; appreciate classical literature's enduring impact on culture and creativity from antiquity to modernity; and enhance writing skills by applying classical rhetorical and narrative techniques for clarity and persuasion.
