The Master of Urban Design is a three-year (optionally four-year), 36-credit program offering students a comprehensive design education focused on shaping regions, cities, and neighborhoods. Emphasizing sustainability and resilience, the program views urban spaces as extensions of ecological systems, giving students hands-on experience across the spectrum from rural to urban environments.
Under the leadership of Program Director Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk, a pioneer in the New Urbanism movement, students examine design strategies, policy frameworks, and management approaches for creating vibrant places that enhance quality of life. Coursework and faculty research emphasize critical issues like the relationship between built environments and public health, suburban transformation, community-focused real estate development, climate adaptation, and urban renewal strategies.
