The Marine Biology and Ecology program offers comprehensive field, lab, and theoretical studies across diverse research fields including coral reef science, ocean biology, fisheries science, and marine animal behavior.

Faculty and students in MBE collaborate globally on cross-disciplinary research projects. The Rosenstiel School at UM houses several key research facilities, including a hatchery lab, The National Center for Coral Reef Studies, the community-driven Rescue-a-Reef program, and the prestigious NIH/University of Miami Aplysia research facility.

Students pursuing graduate studies can select from various specialized research tracks and courses led by world-class researchers investigating coral ecosystems, fishery dynamics, and biomedical applications.

Qualification Requirements

All applicants should review undergraduate preparation requirements and recommendations for a competitive application. In addition to satisfactory scores (as judged by the graduate program) on the appropriate tests, the general requirement for admission is a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with a 3.0 GPA average. Most successful applicants have a bachelor’s degree in biological sciences including a strong foundation in physical sciences (chemistry, physics, calculus) and basic biological sciences.
