Broadcast meteorology represents one of meteorology's fastest-growing private sector employment areas. This specialization readies students for on-air and production roles in weather broadcasting while building foundations for science journalism. The program combines graduate-level broadcast journalism courses from UM's School of Communications with advanced meteorology studies at Rosenstiel School.
Participants gain practical experience in UM's cutting-edge digital studio, mastering professional weather presentation techniques. The UMTV facility features industry-standard equipment with live data feeds and Weather Central visualization tools. Students develop skills in weather analysis, forecasting, and on-camera delivery of local and national weather reports. The curriculum covers critical broadcasting competencies including breaking news coverage, severe weather alerts, improvisation, time management, and collaborative production. Students additionally contribute to NewsVision, UM's acclaimed daily newscast airing on local cable networks, allowing them to hone journalistic and meteorological skills through real-world broadcasting experience. This dual-focused program satisfies the American Meteorological Society's Broadcast Meteorology Certification standards while addressing contemporary environmental concerns.
