The Ph.D. in Literary, Cultural, and Linguistic Studies provides two primary focus areas:

1) Literature and Cultural Analysis

2) Language and Linguistics Research.

The University of Miami integrates comparative cultural and linguistic studies within its Ph.D. Program in Literary, Cultural and Linguistic Studies, serving as the graduate arm of the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures.

Rather than separating by language, our Ph.D. Program brings together scholars who teach and mentor across linguistic boundaries. Courses in Critical Theory, Teaching Methods, Early Modern Research, Gender and Sexuality Studies, Sociolinguistics, Career Development, and other subjects are frequently taught collaboratively by faculty from various language disciplines. Graduate seminars in French, Spanish, and Portuguese covering diverse topics, genres, and periods often adopt a comparative, cross-linguistic approach. Additionally, our department and university boast numerous faculty specializing in Caribbean Studies across English, French, and Spanish traditions.
