The University of Miami launched its Audio Engineering program in 1992. This interdisciplinary initiative blends faculty knowledge from both Electrical and Computer Engineering and the Frost School of Music. Designed to address industry demands, it prepares specialists with robust technical foundations in sound and acoustics applications. Learners develop theoretical understanding from both engineering and musical disciplines, complemented by analytical, technical, and design competencies exclusive to engineering education.
The Audio Engineering track merges conventional electrical engineering subjects like electronics, digital systems, microprocessors, and digital signal processing with audio-focused studies including acoustics, digital audio processing, and transducer technology. Modern lab environments enable hands-on work with electronics, digital systems, microprocessor applications, recording technology, sound synthesis, and acoustic principles. Graduates emerge as audio-focused electrical engineers who are in high demand across professional sectors.
